Among the many gifts Allah has placed in the Quran, few are as accessible and as powerful as the Three Quls. These three short surahs — Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas — were specially taught by the Prophet ﷺ as a daily means of protection. Short enough for a child to memorise, yet profound enough to shield a believer from all forms of harm, they are a daily shield every Muslim family can carry.
In this article, we explore what the Three Quls are, their meanings, and how to make them a protective habit in your daily life.
What Are the Three Quls?
They are called the “Three Quls” because each begins with the command “Qul” — meaning “Say.” They are:
• Surah Al-Ikhlas — the declaration of Allah’s pure oneness.
• Surah Al-Falaq — seeking refuge in the Lord of daybreak from external harms.
• Surah An-Nas — seeking refuge in the Lord of mankind from internal whispers.
The Meaning of Each Surah
Surah Al-Ikhlas — Sincerity
This surah affirms the absolute oneness of Allah: that He is One, Eternal, neither begetting nor begotten, with nothing comparable to Him. The Prophet ﷺ taught that it equals a third of the Quran in reward.
Surah Al-Falaq — The Daybreak
Here we seek refuge in Allah from the harm of His creation, from darkness, from harmful magic, and from the envy of the envier — including the evil eye.
Surah An-Nas — Mankind
This surah seeks refuge from the whispers of Shaytan that creep into the hearts of people. Where Al-Falaq protects from external harm, An-Nas protects from internal harm.
How the Prophet ﷺ Used Them
The Prophet ﷺ would recite these three surahs, blow gently into his cupped hands, and wipe them over his body — beginning with his head and face — three times before sleeping. He also recited them after every obligatory prayer. This simple Sunnah is a complete daily routine of protection.
Making the Three Quls a Family Habit
Because they are short, the Three Quls are perfect for children to learn early. Reciting them together as a family — after prayers and before sleep — builds a beautiful habit and wraps the whole household in Allah’s protection. A child who memorises these three surahs carries a lifelong shield.
A Small Habit, A Great Protection
It takes less than a minute to recite the Three Quls, yet the protection they offer is immense. Teaching them to your children, with correct pronunciation and understanding of their meaning, is one of the simplest and most powerful gifts you can give.
